The SOQUEL HIGH FUND
supporting the academic, art and athletiA non-profit organization
programs at Soquel High School
Dear Soquel High School Parents, Alumni, and Community:
We invite you to join us in investing in our most important resource, our
children, by supporting Soquel High’s Annual Fund Drive. Your donations
to the Soquel High Fund are essential in continuing vital programs like
afterschool athletics, the Humanities Academy and our award winning art
and music programs. Due to continuous budget cuts, most of these
programs are now funded exclusively by you, our community, and
the programs’ fundraising efforts.
To better understand the financial challenges facing Soquel High School,
we thought we would breakdown some the budget cuts imposed for the
2011-12 school year.
~For the third year in a row, there have been very limited funds
allocated to departments for supplies and materials. Paltry sums have
been given to Science, Visual Arts, and Industrial Arts, our most material
intensive programs. No funds have been given to English, Math,
History, World Language, PE or Performing Arts. So there are no new
novels for English, no updated supplements for Math, Spanish
or History, no equipment replacement for PE, and no royalties or music
purchases for the Performing Arts Department. No department is being
provided with supply items like Kleenex, whiteboard markers, etc.
~Also for the third year in a row, no funds have been allocated to stipends
for the adults who devote hundreds of hours for athletics, band, choir,
drama, mock trial, and student activities. The cost of stipends for all of
the above is about $140,000 (Stipends can be $1,000.00 for 150 hours).
· Our textbook clerk and grounds keeper positions have been eliminated.
· School and library improvement funds have been completely cut. These
funds were used to support our intervention classes, buy new computers,
add extra counselor hours and expand our library collections.
· Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) funds have been completely cut.
These funds were used to pay for lab materials in AP Biology, fees for choir
competitions, theater experiences for drama students and many other
extended learning opportunities.
These budget deficits are just some of the most critical budget cuts imposed
for this school year. The budget situation remains precarious, and we see
many of our localprivate and charter schools requesting $2,000-$3,000
from each family to offset cuts.
We know these are difficult financial times for many of our families, the
Soquel High Fund is requesting that each family contribute what they can.
Any amount will be greatly appreciated in our goal of maintaining the
quality programs Soquel High School has to offer.
There are two ways to donate this year. You may write a check payable to
the Soquel High Fund and mail it with this form in the enclosed envelope,
or you may conveniently visit the Soquel High Fund website at
soquelhighfund.org and donate online with a credit card. All donations
are tax deductible.
Sincerely,
Juli McDermott Caren Spencer
